The detail

Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' is one of the most striking winter-interest shrubs available for UK gardens. Renowned for its spectacular stem colour, this deciduous dogwood displays a breathtaking gradient of golden yellow at the base, transitioning through warm orange tones to vivid flame red at the tips. This fiery display is at its most intense during the winter months when the leaves have fallen, bringing warmth and colour to an otherwise dormant garden.

During the growing season, 'Midwinter Fire' produces fresh green oval leaves that provide an attractive backdrop in borders and mixed plantings. In late spring to early summer, clusters of small creamy-white flowers appear, followed by small dark berries in autumn that are enjoyed by birds. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms to rich shades of orange and red before falling to reveal those celebrated colourful stems.
