Bright indirect light plants

Bright indirect light plants

Near a window. Not on the sill.

Plants that want brightness but burn in direct sun. Most tropical foliage falls here — fiddle-leaf figs, calatheas, ferns, birds of paradise, anthuriums. A few feet back from a south or west window is perfect.

Knowledge

Frequently asked

Is bright indirect the same as 'lots of light'?

Sort of. Bright indirect means a brightly lit room where the sun doesn't hit the plant directly. North-facing windows often give bright indirect; south-facing only does with a sheer curtain or distance from the window.

How can I tell if direct sun is reaching the plant?

If you can see your shadow on the wall behind it when the sun is out, it's in direct sun. Move it back a few feet.

Why are the leaves bleached or scorched?

Direct sun. Move further from the window or add a sheer curtain. Damage is permanent on affected leaves but new growth will recover.
