Winter Interest
The best gardens are designed for twelve months, not five.
This collection brings together the plants that earn their keep through autumn and winter: evergreens for structure, coloured stems for low-light interest, winter-flowering shrubs for early nectar, and seed heads that catch the frost. Plant a few of these now and watch your garden look intentional through the quiet months.

Knowledge
Frequently asked
When should I plant for winter interest?
Most can be planted in autumn for instant impact. Spring works too. The sooner the better, since established plants always look stronger than newly-planted ones.
Do winter-flowering plants attract bees?
Yes, and they're essential. Winter-flowering heathers, mahonia, sarcococca and viburnum provide critical nectar for early bumblebees.
How do I care for plants over winter?
Most hardy plants need very little. Mulch the base in autumn, leave seed heads up, and avoid cutting back evergreens until spring.
