Low light plants

Plants that don't need a window to thrive.

Snake plants, ZZ plants, pothos, cast-iron plant, peace lilies — the tolerant few that handle rooms with filtered light or no direct sun at all. Slower-growing, but no less alive.

Knowledge

Frequently asked

How low is 'low light'?

Anywhere bright enough to read by during the day, away from direct sun. Bathrooms, north-facing rooms, corners well back from windows — all fine for these plants.

Will they grow in a windowless room?

Most low-light plants need some natural daylight. A windowless room with the door open to a lit hallway might work for a snake plant; a sealed windowless room won't.

Why are the leaves yellowing?

Low-light plants are especially sensitive to overwatering — yellowing is usually too-wet roots rather than too-little light. Cut back watering before assuming light is the issue.
