The detail
Stachys byzantina, commonly known as Lamb's Ear, is a beloved hardy perennial prized for its wonderfully soft, silvery-grey woolly foliage. This low-growing, mat-forming plant makes an excellent ground cover, gently spreading to create dense carpets of velvety leaves that are irresistible to touch. In summer, upright flower spikes emerge bearing small whorls of pink-purple blooms, adding subtle colour and attracting pollinators to the garden.
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, Stachys byzantina is a wonderfully drought-tolerant and low-maintenance perennial. It is perfectly suited to border edging, gravel gardens, rockeries, sensory gardens and dry planting schemes. The striking silver foliage provides beautiful contrast when planted alongside darker-leaved or brightly flowering companion plants.
